Classes

As a special education teacher, I understand that people learn differently, and am skilled at breaking  challenging topics into small, manageable bites. Knitting has been taught to children throughout the ages, yet still can seem like the most complex of tasks. Let me help you through the tough spots so that you can learn to create heirloom garments for your family or comfy sweaters for yourself without anxiety or stress. Many of the classes I teach include patterns designed by me to help you decode knitting directions and make sense of what looks to be a challenging technique. Currently I teach from my home, but have taught at several local yarn stores and am available to travel to your location upon request.

Learn to Knit A four week class that begins with casting on and a simple garter stitch project and ends with a ribbed hat. At the end of four weeks, you'll be a confident beginner ready to tackle simple projects independently. Basic cast on and bind off, increasing, decreasing, and knit and purl stitches are taught.

Basic Socks A four week class using a heavy sock yarn allows you to work through the basic parts of knitting a sock. The heavy boot sock you create will be a gateway into the sock knitting community. Understanding the anatomy of a sock and creating a sock that fits your unique foot as well as managing double point needles are all part of this intermediate level class.

Fearless Fair Isle This three week class begins with teaching you how to pick your stitches so that you can comfortably carry your yarn in your left hand. We move quickly through the basics of knitting with two colors and discuss how finishing techniques can impact the look of your color work.  Students will make a fair isle hat, as well as cut a steek in a swatch to help tame their fear of this sometimes scary technique.

Learning to Love Lace A two hour workshop geared at introducing an advanced beginner to the basics of increasing and decreasing while creating a beautiful scarf that looks much harder than it is!

Confident Cables A two hour workshop that will explore how to cross your stitches to create the heavily textured fabric associated with Aran knitting. A cozy headband will be a project to introduce you to this technique, and leave you ready to tackle the project of your choice with or without a cable needle.

Finishing Techniques Using the text Seven Things that will Make or Break Your Sweater by Margaret Fisher, this five week class teaches you everything you need to know to have the confidence to create a sweater you can be proud of. We start with a swatch, and work through a baby sweater applying skills and techniques to make your sweaters ready to impress.

Private Lessons Need specific help on your unique project? A private lesson can be the best way to  ensure that you get the help you need. Contact me for information on how to schedule a lesson.

Knitting Help (Group Lessons) For groups of four to seven, I'm happy to meet you at your location and work through a project of your choice as a knit along (KAL) or to work with specific students individually on projects of their choosing. This is a less expensive option than the private lessons, but allows you to tailor the instructional content to your needs. Contact me for information on how to schedule a lesson for your group.
